The "Woman of the Year" award recognizes a woman who is distinguished in her profession and community. The recipient epitomizes the values of SIU Women’s Leadership Council and represents the best of who we are as women and leaders.
The "Trailblazer" award is presented to an outstanding woman with 10-25 years of experience who is making significant strides and demonstrating through her leadership that women are agents of change.
The "Emerging Leader" award is presented to an outstanding woman with 5-10 years of experience who is making significant strides and demonstrating through her leadership that women are agents of change.
The "Rising Star" award is presented to a female student with exceptional leadership qualities within the SIU Carbondale community.

Dr. Dawn Korte
With over 30 years of expertise in operations, finance and human resources in multiple industries, Dawn is valued for achieving strategic goals by connecting people, processes, and technology to drive organizational transformation in a digital economy. Dawn is passionate about working at the intersection of strategy and people, thus creating alignment for maximum organizational performance and profitability. She partnered with senior leaders in the design and implementation of enterprise-wide HR transformations for prospective and current SAP SuccessFactors customers. She also served as a trusted internal advisor to executive leadership by translating SAP's People Strategy into people programs and initiatives which drove business success, provided leader, team, and organization development to build skills for the future, guided business transformation for enterprise agility, and utilized workforce planning and analytics to project the future of work.
Previous to joining SAP, Dawn fulfilled her dream of owning her own consulting business. She shared her aptitude for turnaround initiatives and extraordinary energy with mid-sized to large businesses to create net income and drive cultural transformation, specifically utilizing technology to drive value and produce results.
At SSM Health, a large Catholic health system in the Midwest, Dawn was the System Vice President of Innovation, Learning and HR where she was responsible for the creation of leadership development, strategic human capital management, performance development, succession planning, process improvement, and innovation for the entire system. She has also held numerous senior leadership positions in both operations and finance in healthcare, and successfully transformed numerous non-clinical departments through talent management strategies, thus increasing employee engagement and retention. Her early career was in financial and operational leadership roles at BJC HealthCare. She has also served as Chief Financial Officer of a private family business.
Additionally, Dawn has a broad academic and learning background with over 25 years of instruction on a university level. Most notably, she served as the Healthcare Executive in Residence, and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Saint Louis University in the College of Public Health and Social Justice in the Master of Health Administration program which is nationally recognized.
Dawn received a PhD from Saint Louis University, MBA from Lindenwood University, and BS from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Dawn holds both SPHR and SHRM – SCP certifications. She retired from SAP in 2023, lives in Trenton, Illinois with her husband, Dan, and enjoys playing the piano, all types of exercise, and remains fearless in the kitchen and classroom.
"It is rewarding to spend time giving back to SIUC in numerous roles within the Foundation and College of Health & Human Sciences. However, it has been my privilege to serve as a founding member, past president and current chairperson of the Women's Leadership Council. Helping to create a group with other dedicated women to improve the careers of SIU students, encourage diversity & inclusion, and empower change has been one of the greatest professional accomplishments of my life. I am humbled to be recognized as a Woman of the Year from a group that is changing SIU by lifting other women up through leadership, mentorship, philanthropy, and sharing of hearts."
Dr. Jarmese SherrodDr. Jarmese Sherrod is a visionary, selfless leader, educator, and purpose-driven trailblazer whose legacy of service spans more than two decades. As the founder of Sherrod’s Independent Mentoring Program (S.I.M.P.) and SheWill Legacy NFP, she has empowered thousands across the U.S. and abroad through youth development, women’s empowerment, and global service projects in Haiti, South Africa, Germany, and Puerto Rico. Her work has been recognized at the highest levels, including being named #1 in Illinois by Governor Pritzker’s Hometown Awards, and receiving the American Red Cross International Services Humanitarian Award, COVID 19-Hero Award, Turnitin Global Innovation Award for Student Engagement, the Boys & Girls Club Partnership of the Year, and the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award while being spotlighted in the 2024 Shine Powerful Women Magazine.
With 24 years as an English/Communications/Media professor, Dr. Sherrod has transformed classrooms and systems. As the co-chair of the Illinois Faculty Advisory Board for the DERA Corequisite Support Toolkit, she advanced equity in higher education statewide. She has also served as an international educator to U.S. military personnel and civilians in Germany for two years, with an additional 11 years via online platforms. She taught globally through the Department of Defense and community colleges and universities across the U.S.
Dr. Sherrod has designed and led training for CEOs, supervisors, educators, and community leaders in areas such as budgeting, academic support, and youth assessment through the Black Community Providers Network. She has built over 100 annual partnerships with institutions such as Decatur Public Schools, Chicago Public Schools, the American Red Cross, and programs of the Macon and Cook County Police Departments. Her work includes developing mentorship programs, designing curricula, evaluating outcomes, and managing volunteer teams and budgets in alignment with state and federal standards for children, youth, adults, seniors, and veterans.
Her women’s empowerment work includes developing and facilitating reentry and leadership programs for incarcerated women in Cook County and Decatur Correctional Centers. She served as Co-Chair for the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Central Region Leadership Training Institute, training over 6,000 women in seven states for 4 years. She continues to mentor women professionally through Roosevelt University and guide doctoral candidates in obtaining their doctoral degrees in other institutions.
Dr. Sherrod also champions youth through leadership conferences, academic advising, college tours, and national service projects. She has helped students secure full scholarships, conduct service projects, and lead change through partnerships with organizations such as Sandy Hook Promise, USO, Chicago Youth Centers, the American Red Cross, NAACP Chicago, United Nations, Girls, Inc., Chicago aldermen & civic leaders, and more. As an ICJIA R3 grantee, Dr. Sherrod led violence prevention, youth development, and reentry initiatives that impacted more than 20,000 people with free programming. She is a woman with a heart of service and remains a force for transformation where she breaks barriers, builds bridges, and inspires others to soar and serve.

Dr. Elaine VitelloDr. Elaine M. Vitello’s legacy at Southern Illinois University is defined by groundbreaking leadership, bold innovation, and a deep commitment to inclusivity. As SIU’s first female academic dean, she led the College of Technical Careers through a transformative restructuring, elevating associate degree programs into dynamic baccalaureate offerings. Her tenure as Dean of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts (1990–2002) significantly reshaped the academic landscape, resulting in the establishment of 23 degree programs and an enrollment of over 2,400 students by 2017.
Among her most enduring contributions is the conceptualization and fundraising efforts that helped launch the $35 million Transportation Education Center at Southern Illinois Airport. This ambitious project has become a cornerstone of SIU’s technical education infrastructure. Even after her retirement in 2002, Dr. Vitello continued to serve the university and region as Acting Director of the Center for Rural Health and Social Services Development (2002–2009), championing health equity and rural outreach.
A lifelong advocate for underrepresented voices, Dr. Vitello has mentored generations of students and faculty, empowering them with her signature “I can do this” philosophy. Her philanthropic support of the Elaine M. Vitello Ph.D. Leadership Award ensures women in the College of Health and Human Sciences receive mentorship and leadership training to overcome barriers and thrive.
Dr. Vitello’s academic journey began with a Bachelor’s degree from Ohio Dominican University (1967), followed by a Master’s from The Ohio State University (1971), and culminated in a Ph.D. in Health Education from SIU (1977). As Charter Certified Health Education Specialist #8, she helped shape the profession’s standards and served in leadership roles across AAHE, ASHA, APHA, SOPHE, and the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing. Her prolific scholarship includes 160 presentations, 38 peer-reviewed articles, and multiple book contributions.
Her enduring influence is reflected in the programs she built, the inclusive culture she fostered, and the many lives she inspired. Dr. Vitello’s trailblazing career and unwavering dedication to diversity have left a lasting mark on SIU and beyond.

Colby Chapman
Colby Chapman is a proud lifelong resident of Harvey, Illinois, and a visionary leader committed to youth, equity, and community advancement. A two-time graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, she earned her B.A. in Criminology and Forensic Science in 2009 and her M.S.Ed. in Program Leadership, graduating with honors in 2011.
She is the founder of PennyUp, a nonprofit that has empowered over 500 youth through financial aid, education, and mentorship. A devoted member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Colby exemplifies the values of service, scholarship, and sisterhood.
In 2025, Colby Chapman made history as the first woman and first woman of color elected Alderwoman of Harvey’s 2nd Ward since the city’s incorporation in 1891. Her work has earned honors including the Chicago City Clerks Women of Worth, National Pan-Hellenic Council Chicago Chapter Black Excellence Sankofa Award, Chicago Defender Women of Excellence, Legacy School of Performing Arts Legacy Ball Honoree, and more.
Rooted in faith and driven by purpose, Colby’s story is one of transformation, resilience, and radical hope, a living reminder that when women lead with purpose, they don’t just make change, they become the change. Colby Chapman is committed to leaving behind more than a title, but a legacy of service, justice, and empowered community.

Lolita L. Mack
Lolita L. Mack is a Southern Illinois native and two-time graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She received her B.F.A. in Graphic Design with a minor in Art History in Spring 2004 and M.S.Ed. in Workforce Education & Development specializing in Program Management in Spring 2006. Ms. Mack is currently a doctoral candidate in the Workforce Education and Development program.

Sophia Westrich
Sophia Westrich is the co-founder of Advance Women, a fast-growing organization championing equity and opportunity for women in every field. A former 2x Division I All-American in Track & Field and SIU alumna, Sophia earned her B.S. in Mathematics before launching a successful career scaling high-growth AdTech startups. She has served as VP of Operations and Sales Ops at venture-backed firms, helping drive revenues from zero to mid-eight figures, lead acquisitions, and turn companies profitable.
In 2024, she co-founded Advance Women, which—by mid-2025—had raised over $50K and built a 500+ member community, hosting events across New York, Miami, and Cannes, FR. A courageous leader shaped by experience in male-dominated spaces, she’s committed to creating workplaces where women can thrive. Sophia also leads strategy and operations at Decide Technologies, advises startups, and mentors future entrepreneurs—all while raising her four-year-old son and advancing a vision of leadership rooted in impact, equity, and speed.

Monique Spears, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC
Monique Spears is a devoted wife, mother of three, and a passionate healthcare professional with over 10 years of experience. She is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner working full-time with Molina Healthcare, providing in-home care to underserved communities in the Southern Illinois region. Monique is also the Founder and CEO of Emerged Beauty, PLLC, a mobile aesthetic practice aiming to bring services directly to clients, making beauty and wellness more accessible for busy professionals, parents, and self-care enthusiasts. Both her professional and entrepreneurial roles reflect her heart for people, commitment to uplifting others, importance of accessibility to care, and dedication to creating impact in the communities she serves.

Dr. Tamekia Smith
Dr. Tamekia Smith brings extensive experience in higher education and workforce development, currently serving as the Dean for Business and Social Sciences at Waubonsee Community College. Dr. Smith has a diverse portfolio with experience in Health Sciences, Public Service, Mechanical Technology, and Nursing. She is also an elected board member for Homewood-Flossmoor High School District 233.
Committed to advancing education, Dr. Smith integrates cutting-edge technology, fosters collaborative learning environments, and develops curriculum that aligns with evolving workforce demands. She is passionate about creating equitable opportunities that empower students to excel both academically and professionally.
A dedicated advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, Dr. Smith actively works to eliminate systemic barriers, cultivate a sense of belonging, and support a diverse learning community. Her leadership is rooted in transparency, strategic resource management, and innovative approaches to student and academic success.
Dr. Smith is also a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.

Dr. Laura Walkup Laura Walkup, PhD, is a dual-degree Saluki with BS (’08) and PhD (’13) degrees in chemistry from SIU. Her dissertation focused on hyperpolarized xenon (Xe) gas for magnetic-resonance applications. After postdoctoral training at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Dr. Walkup joined the faculty in 2019 and is now an NIH R01-funded associate professor. The goal of Dr. Walkup’s research is to develop MRI techniques to individualize clinical care and improve outcomes for people with lung disease. Her research focuses on the development of faster MRI sequences and clinical-translational applications of Xe MRI in pediatric and adult lung diseases, with emphasis on rare-lung diseases like cystic fibrosis. She leads multidisciplinary collaborations across pulmonary medicine, radiology, and oncology, and she mentors trainees in biomedical engineering. Dr. Walkup has authored 55+ scientific papers, including the first studies demonstrating safety and feasibility of Xe MRI in children and children unable to perform standard lung-function tests.

Sheraya Bernard
From a small town in South Louisiana to the halls of SIU, Sheraya embodies the power of community. As a third-year law student and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she's dedicated to advocacy and lifting others as she climbs. She serves on SIU's Dean & Faculty Selection Committees and represents law students on the Graduate & Professional Student Council. Whether volunteering with the Carbondale Warming Center, supporting the SIU Student Engagement Office Feeding Our Community Events, researching for the SIU Center for Archaeological Investigations, or cleaning the streets through Keep Carbondale Beautiful, Sheraya shows up. Beyond her volunteer work, she currently serves as a judicial intern in federal court while managing cases for SIU's Office of the General Counsel. But what sets Sheraya apart is her genuine belief that everyone deserves a chance to succeed. Having traveled the world and experienced different cultures, she brings that global perspective back to everything she does at SIU. Sheraya exemplifies what it means to be a Saluki: working hard, serving others, and making our community stronger. She's exactly the kind of leader who makes SIU proud.
This recognition reminds me that when we invest in our community, our community invests in us. It motivates me to keep showing up for the people and places that have shaped who I am today. As an SIU Rising Star, my best is yet to come.
Dejah Farmer
My name is Dejah Farmer. I’m 26 years old and I’m from St. Louis, Missouri. I’m currently earning my second bachelor’s degree in Recreation Professions with a specialization in Therapeutic Recreation at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Public Health and work full-time as an infant teacher at Rainbow’s End.
I founded the Sunshine Committee to strengthen team morale by coordinating staff appreciation, designing monthly recognitions, and leading initiatives that celebrate joy and connection. Alongside supporting the Sunshine Committee, I also assist with administrative tasks and help across classrooms and center-wide operations when needed. I serve on the social planning committee for Tesserae, Carbondale’s first LGBTQ+ choir, and I’m a member of the Illinois Recreation Therapy Association (ILRTA).
I’m working toward becoming a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and postpartum doula, with a passion for healing-centered, inclusive care.

Cordelia Lemons
Cordelia is a civil engineering major at Southern Illinois University (SIU), specializing in environmental engineering, with double minors in sustainability and environmental studies. Her academic path reflects a strong commitment to creating a better and more sustainable world.
As a dynamic leader on campus, Cordelia serves as the president of both the Student Women's Leadership Council and the SIU chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). In her role at ASCE, she is currently leading the planning of their annual student symposium, which is a key event for the organization. Additionally, she serves as a student board member of the Women's Leadership Council and as treasurer of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), demonstrating her dedication to empowering others and promoting inclusive excellence.
Cordelia's involvement extends beyond academics; she actively participates in technical teams and athletics. She is a member of the Steel Bridge team, the Concrete Canoe team, and the Women's Rugby team, showcasing her collaborative spirit and determination.
Her impact on the SIU community is already significant, and her future trajectory suggests even greater influence. This summer, she secured a competitive internship with Nucor, a top-tier steel manufacturing company.
Traseanda Jones
Traseanda Jones is a political science student at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where she leads through campus involvement and advocacy. She serves as Vice President of the Delta Beta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a Senator in Undergraduate Student Government, and formerly served as Chief Financial Officer of the Black Affairs Council, where she oversaw funding for over 35 student organizations. Off campus, Traseanda advances her passion for public service as a legislative intern with the Illinois Department of Early Childhood, supporting policy research and legislative work. She was the 2025 Alexander Lane Intern with the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, working with the Illinois Senate Democratic Caucus as a Policy and Budget Intern, assisting with legislative analysis and policy development for Illinois senators. She also supported event operations for the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Traseanda is dedicated to amplifying student voices and driving policy change across Illinois.
