The College of Liberal Arts (CoLA) prepares students to face the challenges of a changing world. The generosity of donors has allowed CoLA to provide program-wide support, including student scholarships and awards, funding for faculty and students to present their work at professional meetings, facility enhancements, and underwriting aspects of student and faculty research. Every contribution is greatly appreciated.
CoLA offers 14 undergraduate majors, more than 22 undergraduate minors, and several certificate programs, both in person and online. We also have nine M.A. programs, seven doctoral programs, and two post-baccalaureate certificates. In addition, CoLA offers several 4+1 and 3+2 programs that enable students to accelerate their bachelor's degree and complete a master’s or J.D. degree. These programs span a wide range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, providing students with many choices.
Starting in Fall 2025, CoLA will introduce an Interdisciplinary Major, allowing students to customize their major by combining up to three disciplines of their choice. Donor support has played a crucial role in funding these disciplines, fostering innovation, and expanding academic opportunities.
Accomplished scholars teach our courses and mentor students in research labs and centers. Undergraduate students have the opportunity to collaborate with professors on research and creative projects. Many CoLA faculty members could teach anywhere in the world, yet they choose SIU Carbondale because of the university’s unique balance of teaching and research. The College of Liberal Arts represents the intellectual foundation of a great research university while maintaining a strong commitment to student success.
CoLA is also home to three centers that enhance the student experience:
- The Center for Archaeological Investigations
- The Center for English as a Second Language
- The Center for Virtual Expression – our newest addition, which helps faculty integrate the latest technologies into their courses to enhance student engagement through AI, VR, gamification, and more.
If you are an employer seeking top talent, you will find exceptional candidates in this college. CoLA graduates are well-prepared for graduate school and competitive careers across various industries. Your support can keep this momentum going and ensure a bright future for the next generation of liberal arts graduates.
